And my biological family did not fit those stereotypes, and I think that was really hard for people to process. Whereas white parents, a lot of times, it is much harder the bar is much higher to remove them from their homes because their whiteness or possibly class privilege or whatever identities that they have that might not fit a social worker or judges or whoevers involved perception of whose kids should be in the foster system. And I think psychologically one way people feel safer about it is to say: No, that happens to other people. Its just so obvious that you fit the criteria for low-income, but it seems like they feel like you dont fit it in the spirit of how they want it. The fact that they even challenged that really does expose a lot of whats going on here because I assume in their mind, theyre saying: Well, she went to this private school; she had a nice house; her mom probably drove a nice car maybe you even drove a decent car! RG: who was, I believe now, the acting provost. [26] In the second, he wrote, "[y]ou could also conclude from Mackenzie Fierceton's story that there is no actual empathy within elite institutions unless you perfectly fit into the trauma hierarchy they have created, which preferences the types of overcoming-adversity stories they can place in a brochure. And so if its a well-educated white girl from a private school, thats way too close to home for a lot of these elites. Two weeks into the school year, she realized she had been wrong. Yeah. Later, another Whitfield parent Morrison had talked to told this woman that she believed Fierceton had done this to get admitted to an Ivy League college, an idea which she found preposterous. And then as the different internships, and then I went to get my masters in social work and all of this happened, I started to see that continue in different capacities while I was in different roles, seeing that theme in this relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system. [Laughs.] How did you get to school? MF: And that is, I felt very defeated too. "Once you do something that the University sees as undermining its quest for power and prestige, it will not think twice about discarding you, humiliating you, and retaliating against you, which is exactly what they did" said one SP2 student in support of Fierceton. And to me, Im like I am a household of one, so I am the only person in my family. She arrives as a new student at Erinsborough High School and is connected to the . Like some students do have a story, more like me where they had some kind of separation from their family; other students their parents were doctors or lawyers or Ph.D. students in other countries, but then they came here and their degrees no longer, essentially, counted or people who are just first-generation and not necessarily low-income or people who are low-income, but not first-generation. But part of it is funding decisions. And I was having flashbacks to cross-examinations and depositions Id given about this which later made sense, because we found out that Wendy White had spoken with one of Carries defense lawyers. RG: That was Mackenzie Fierceton and thats our show. It's from there the story unraveled. Mother and daughter both told the same stories they had earlier; Morrison depicted her daughter as "willful and intense", claiming she had bought and read many books to try to help her understand the issues she said Fierceton had. And she was shocked. At her request Penn kept her contact information out of the school's directory on its website. And then throughout the now a year and a half process [laughs] of different sort of invented processes that happened, eventually the university was like: OK, I guess shes low-income. RG: I want to talk about where you think that pushback came from. Mackenzie Fierceton has lost her Rhodes Scholarship and her University of Pennsylvania master's degree is being held after an anonymous tipster called out alleged inaccuracies in her school. [2][4][15], After learning this, Fierceton and a fellow SP2 student began doing research. on about your day, ask yourself: How likely is it that the story you just read would have been produced by a different news outlet if The Intercept hadnt done it? "[2], Fierceton was one of 15 freshmen made Civic Scholars, a program focused on social justice and community service, with an emphasis on confronting the intersections of identity and privilege. I was in this private school with a lot of upper-middle class or wealthy white students. And that was the end of it, right? That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. The mother hired a high-powered attorney and engaged in a local campaign to discredit Mackenzie. "We would never have believed any of it if we weren't living it." She found Fierceton's diary at the house and read it, then interviewed teachers and administrators at Whitfield, learning of Morrison's insulting texts to Fierceton. So the students had to form a human chain from the first floor down to the basement where all our classes are to relay instructions from the paramedics, the Philadelphia paramedics, to the professor who was, to my understanding, performing CPR. Smith said he believed the university had decided before it began investigating that Fierceton's abuse allegations were false and that she had fabricated them with the goal of finding an easier way into Penn or another elite school. A former teacher in elementary school recalled that in one of those calls, Morrison made a reference to an earlier discussion of Fierceton's mental illness; the teacher did not remember any such conversation. And that was the end of it, right? Raised in Chesterfield, Missouri, a West County suburb of St. Louis, she attended and graduated from the Whitfield School in Creve Coeur. Its, in my opinion, because they get overlooked and the kids like me are kind of rendered invisible by the privileges of our biological families. Like, I dont have the precise statistics in front of me, but if you asked people to guess at the number of people who will experience, say, two years of poverty in their life, people will miss it by magnitudes. [2], Fierceton remained in the hospital, where DSS ordered her placed in protective custody. And I ended up reading the comments, and the comments were just horrendous. This can happen to someone in my community. [2], Two months later the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. And whats the difference between the U.S. and English system? RG: And so where is your story now? RG: And that feels like one of them where it feels like the system is willfully misunderstanding reality in order to bend it in their direction. And I think that she kind of encompassed a lot of the stereotypes that people, and also the Penn administrators have about what FGLI students are when in reality, those of us who are part of the community know that theres so many shapes and sizes of FGLI students. "I had so much anger and grief, and I didn't want them to be affiliated in any way with this new life I was building. And when I asked her again when I was gathering all this evidence in 2020, she gave me the same answer of: I dont believe its relevant, and this box isnt relevant to admission.
